When potty training puppies, its important to keep schedules and have a designated area for your dog to always use for his business. Dogs are creatures of habit so consistency and routine are important parts of housetraining. This aspects of potty training puppies are covered in other articles on the Potty Training Puppies Blog. In addition to these factors, there are 3 other parts that are important for potty training puppies that are often not mentioned.

First, as noted, you do not want to change the schedule or location where your puppy does his business in order to maintain consistency. In addition, you do not want to change where he eats or sleeps while potty training. If you start mixing up locations designated for eating, sleeping and eliminating or change timing, your puppy will just get confused. As he's older and completely house trained, you can make changes as long as you go through the training process again so your dog learns the new routine.

Second, if your puppy has an accident, you need to take responsibility. Your puppy is still learning what you want him to do. If he accidentally messes in the house, you need to look back at what you did. Did you get off schedule or not take him out after eating or sleeping? Your puppy will give you signals that he needs to go out. Did you miss the signal or was your puppy not with you at all times? You're the teacher when potty training puppies, so accidents and avoiding them are up to you!

That brings us to the final point - never "rub your puppy's nose in it" or yell at him when he has an accident. This does more harm than good when potty training puppies. These techniques will actually scare your puppy and teach him to hide from you when he needs to go to the bathroom. People who use these techniques when potty training puppies then wonder why they find messes behind the couch or some other hidden spot. You need to positively reinforce your puppy's behavior and be patient while he is learning.

There are many other facets to potty training puppies. These 3 tips are often overlooked even though they are important. If you follow these tips as well as consistently maintain a routine and schedule, your puppy will be house training in no time.
